SsangYong Torres is coming to Europe as an electric 4x4

Max McDee, 18 June 2022

SsangYong has unveiled its latest 4x4 model - Torres. The car fills the gap between the Korando and Rexton models making it the second largest 4x4 in the lineup. That makes it about the size of VW ID.4 or the Skoda Enyaq but as all SsangYong models it is designed for full time off-roading unlike its competitors.

This South Korean equivalent of Land Rover prides itself in off-road abilities for all of its models but neither the design nor equipment levels are comparable, unfortunately. Despite that the company has released some very capable vehicles over the years and built up a reputation of solid and dependable automaker.

The car in the pictures is the European version that will only be available as an EV, it will be built on the same platform as its smaller sibling, Korando. The two will share a 188hp (130 kW) electric powertrain and 61.5 kWh battery that gives the smaller car 210 miles (338 km) of driving range. Since the Torres is much larger we can expect the range to be quite a bit lower.

SsangYong doesn’t sell a lot of cars in Europe - last year it managed to shift just over 9,000 vehicles and in its best year so far (2006) it sold just over 32,000 cars. Since then its sales are hovering around 10,000 units every year and have been falling steadily.

This presents a good opportunity for the company as it won’t struggle to fulfill the orders and it may end up taking over a very lucrative niche for itself. It all depends now on the price of Torres but judging by the company’s value approach we can have an interesting and affordable electric 4x4 coming to Europe soon.
