Tesla delivered 38% more vehicles in 2023, is still ahead of BYD
A few hours ago, BYD reported its sales numbers for 2023, and we let you know it sold 1,574,822 pure electric EVs last year. Now it's time for Tesla to report the same thing, and the numbers may be closer than you would have expected - or, differently put, BYD is now getting really really close to Tesla.
Tesla delivered a total of 1,808,581 vehicles in 2023, a 38% increase compared to 2022. Of those, 1,739,707 were Model 3 and Model Y cars. So Tesla only delivered 68,874 other models - this includes the Model S, the Model X, and the Cybertruck. Those are pretty insane numbers, tilted massively in favor of the more affordable EVs in the company's portfolio.
Tesla also separately releases information about production numbers, and so for the whole of 2023 it made 1,845,985 vehicles, of which 1,775,159 were Model 3 and Model Y, and 70,826 were other models.
In the final quarter of 2023 (October to December), Tesla manufactured 494,989 vehicles, of which 476,777 were Model 3 and Model Y and 18,212 were other models. Deliveries to customers stood at 484,507 - 461,538 Model 3s and Model Ys, and 22,969 other models.
Tesla will post its financial results for Q4 2023 on January 24, along with a full year update. Stay tuned.
