The Volkswagen ID. Golf isn't coming anytime soon

Volkswagen has recently introduced the ID. Polo EV, and since the company is now on a mission to bring iconic names back you may have been wondering when to expect the ID. Golf to join it - after all, the Golf is by far VW's most recognizable model name.

Unfortunately, the ID. Golf won't coming anytime soon. According to a new report, VW CEO Thomas Schäfer told FT's Future of the Car event in London that there's "no need" for a Golf EV to be coming in 2028, as was previously rumored. In the meantime, the brand is getting ready to release the aforementioned ID. Polo but also the updated ID.3 Neo and the ID. Cross.

VW apparently has "a fantastic line-up now", according to Schäfer. So the company will take its sweet time on this one, and it seems to have to do with the SSP platform that the Golf will be using. This platform will have an 800V architecture, more advanced battery technology, and new software developed in collaboration with Rivian.

The SSP platform was originally intended to arrive this year, but has seen multiple delays and the best estimate now is that the first cars using it will come out in 2028. While the ID. Golf was supposed to be among the first to employ the new platform, Schäfer has now confirmed that models from Audi and Porsche will get first dibs.

Schäfer says the VW group had to rethink EV pricing in light of Chinese competition and "redo the maths" regarding platform costs in terms of materials and investment.
