Updated Tesla Model Y deliveries start - MIIT filing reveals optional radar

Tesla's refreshed Model Y deliveries already began and an MIIT filing in China has revealed an interesting detail.

The MIIT catalog features two Model Y entries, distinguishable by their model numbers, TSL6480BEVAR3 and TSL6480BEVAR4. While their visuals and model numbers might vary, the provided specifications for both are identical. Here's where it gets interesting: potential buyers can choose to outfit their Model Y with radar and opt for front fog lights. The inclusion of radar is probably the most important difference here, after the company's full reliance on cameras for its ADAS and subsequent saga of radar modules removal from customer’s cars.

Both MIIT-listed Model Y versions boast a single motor, flexing a robust 220 kW output, and both come with lithium iron phosphate batteries from CATL. According to the filing, the Model Y stretches 187 inches in length, stands 63.9 inches tall, and flaunts a width of 75.6 inches with a wheelbase of 113.8 inches. The top speed of 217 km/h is listed as well - the only difference is an extra 0.04 inches in width when compared to the first Model Y.

The updated Model Y starts from RMB 263,900 (equivalent to $36,120). The car received a few touch-ups, but the price remained untouched.

In China Tesla offers a trio of Model Y variants: the basic Model Y with rear-wheel drive, the Model Y Long Range that comes with dual-motor all-wheel drive, and the power-packed Model Y Performance, also with dual-motor all-wheel drive. With the update the base Model Y gets a range and acceleration boost, while the Long Range sees an uptick in range.

Additionally, the new Model Y flaunts upgrades such as multi-hued ambient lighting, a spruced-up dashboard trim, and new 19-inch wheels that might just have car enthusiasts drooling a little.

When it comes to delivery times, the base and Performance variants will make you tap your foot for 2-6 weeks, while the Long Range variant stretches the wait to 6-8 weeks.

Interestingly enough, Tesla’s Model 3 saw 2,079 sales in September in China, while the Model Y left it in the dust, clocking a whopping 41,428 units. This constitutes a staggering 95.22% of Tesla’s sales in China for that month. The slow Model 3 sales can be contributed to the Giga Shanghai starting production of the Model 3 Highland and the resulting weeks of stoppage.
