XPeng P7 to retain scissor door version after refresh

XPeng just officially unveiled the next generation of its P7 electric sedan in China, but one detail the previous model was famous for was seemingly missing. Now, the company confirmed it is sticking with a feature more commonly seen on Italian supercars: scissor doors. This blend of practicality and added drama is supposed to elevate the company's brand image - an important factor in the world's most competitive electric car market.

For anyone who enjoys making an entrance, XPeng confirmed it will continue to offer a special "Wing Edition" of the new P7. This version keeps the dramatic, upward-swinging front doors from the previous generation, a feature that remains exclusive to the P7 in XPeng's lineup.

The new Wing Edition comes with a unique matte silver paint finish and a host of exclusive cosmetic upgrades. These include sportier seats, a gray interior theme, custom door sills, and lightweight 21-inch forged wheels. Carbon fiber accents on the interior trim panels and rearview mirrors complete the high-performance look. It's a package designed for enthusiasts who value style as much as substance.

Beneath the flashy exterior, the new P7 is built on a serious technological foundation. The electric sedan runs on an advanced 800-volt high-voltage architecture. This system enables incredibly fast charging speeds. XPeng claims its 5C ultra-fast charging battery can add up to 326 miles of range in just 10 minutes. When fully charged, the car claims a maximum CLTC-rated range of 510 miles.

Performance figures place the new P7 in sports sedan territory. The car can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3 seconds and reach a top speed of 143 mph. Powering its advanced driver-assistance features are three of XPeng's self-developed Turing AI driving chips. Together, they provide an effective computing power of 2,250 TOPS (trillion operations per second), which the company states is the highest smart driving computing power available in any production EV to date.

To prove the P7's durability, XPeng planned a 24-hour high-speed endurance test. The challenge involved running the car continuously on a track, with drivers rotating to maintain high speeds and perform repeated ultra-fast charging stops. However, Mother Nature had other plans.

The test was temporarily halted after severe overnight weather, including heavy rain and fog, resulted in standing water on the high-speed circuit. Citing safety risks, XPeng, together with the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (CATARC) and the track operator, decided to put the test on hold. The company plans to restart the 24-hour clock from zero once conditions improve.

The new P7 is intended to boost XPeng's brand appeal and compete in a more premium segment. Currently, the company's sales leader is the more affordable Mona M03, which accounted for nearly 43% of its deliveries in July. With the P7, XPeng is targeting a price point around RMB 300,000 ($41,840). Although pre-orders opened on August 6, the final pricing will not be revealed until the official launch later this month.
