Yangwang U8, the Chinese 1,100 hp electric offroader, is getting tantalizingly close to its market debut. The car has been introduced only a few months ago but it already has undergone serious off-road testing to prove it is more than just a boulevard tiger.

For the first time we have a chance to get a glimpse of the interior of this rather large 4x4. At 5.3 meters in length and just over 3 meters of wheelbase, the Yangwang U8 offers a lot of room for the passengers. While the rear-most row of seats is rather for emergency use, the middle row passengers are treated to class-leading legroom.

What we see in the photos is unquestionably an interior designed for life of luxury, not the utilitarian approach we could expect from a car that looks like it can cross deserts. There is a strong influence in design from Range Rover and Land Rover cars and even the contrast between utilitarian exterior and luxury interior follows the same approach.

The selling point of the Yangwand U8 will be its performance. The car is powered by four independent electric motors, each delivering 275 hp and 320 Nm of torque. It can perform the so-called “tank turn” on the spot and its drivetrain and the cabin are water-tight allowing the car to float and cross shallow waters.

Thanks to its combined power output of 1,100 hp and despite its rather hefty size, the Yangwang U8 deals with the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 3 seconds. This has to be one heck of an experience and while the acceleration may be fun, stopping this giant 4x4 will require some serious brakes and nerves of steel.

Yangwang U8 will be officially launched in April at the Shanghai Auto Show. The first deliveries are expected some time in September this year and the starting price for this enormous offroader is expected to be around RMB 800,000 or $118,000 at current exchange rates.
