Apple showcases next-gen CarPlay at WWDC

Max McDee, 12 June 2024

Apple used its WWDC event to showcase the progress it made with the next generation of CarPlay. Initially announced in 2022 the upcoming CarPlay system is finally coming this year and the company now showed what we can expect from it.

With most modern EVs sporting multiple screens, Apple gives automakers and drivers the tools to tailor the interface to their liking. Apple promises a dashboard that looks and feels exactly how you want it, with the data you need, right where you need it.

Ben Crick, the Apple CarPlay Human Interface Designer, painted a picture of a system that seamlessly adapts to various screen sizes and configurations. Whether you prefer your navigation maps front and center or tucked away on a passenger display, CarPlay will give you the option.

Apple is urging automakers to co-develop the CarPlay interface, allowing for deeper integration with vehicle systems. This means that in the not-so-distant future, you might be controlling your EV's climate control, adjusting driving modes, or even fine-tuning driver-assist settings directly through CarPlay so you don't need to jump back and forth between it and the core platform. This level of integration could blur the lines between your car's native systems and Apple's platform, creating a more cohesive and intuitive user experience.

Some manufacturers, like Porsche and Aston Martin, have already jumped on board, eager to leverage Apple's technology in their future vehicles. Others, however, remain hesitant, citing concerns about brand identity and control over their systems.

While there's no official release date yet, but seeing how the company is now going into that much detail we can hope it won't be much longer now.

nah, this is good, but i want my car with its own os system. thats the the reason i like tesla, they dont do apple car play.

I think this is a truly appalling idea. Climate control shouldn't be by screens anyway, but blurring phone and vehicle means that you are now locked into two systems with two sets of vulnerabilites, and the possibility of having your phone stole...
