BMW demos its Panoramic iDrive infotainment

Max McDee, 08 January 2025

BMW is going all-in on widescreen displays and AI-powered assistance with its next-generation infotainment system. The German automaker has just taken the wraps off its new infotainment system, dubbed Panoramic iDrive, and it's the market-ready descendant of the system that debuted on the Vision Neue Klasse concept last year.

The centerpiece, of course, is that gigantic panoramic display that stretches across the entire dashboard. BMW says the new system is powered by the Android-based BMW Operating System X, and will offer a more intuitive and immersive user experience. The company wants us to think of it as a personal command center for everything from navigation and entertainment to vehicle settings and driver assistance features.

BMW is also making a big push into artificial intelligence with its new system. The integrated voice assistant now uses a Large Language Model, the same technology behind those eerily human-like chatbots you might have encountered online. According to BMW, we'll soon be able to interact with the car in a more natural way, using everyday language instead of stilted commands.

The rollout of Panoramic iDrive will begin later this year with the next-generation BMW 3-Series. And yes, that includes the electric version, too. BMW has confirmed that the new system will be available on all future models, regardless of their powertrain.

The panoramic display will be highly customizable, allowing drivers to choose which information they want to see and how they want to see it. The system will also offer a range of connected services, including real-time traffic updates, over-the-air software updates, and integration with your smartphone.

On the face of things, the system, together with its dashboard-spanning display, looks amazing. But will it really make driving easier? We'll find out soon enough.
