Electrify America moves to station-specific pricing

Electrify America (EA) is giving its charging stations a pricing makeover. But is it for the better?

Starting August 17, Electrify America will assign specific prices to each of its stations. It's how pricing at gas stations has always worked and it makes a lot of sense since no two locations are the same in terms of upkeep.

The company is also reintroducing idle fees. No more sipping lattes without a care in the world while your car's fully charged. If you overstay, you'll be coughing up 40 cents for every extra minute after the 10-minute grace period. Good news for those waiting in line, though.

Interestingly, Electrify America hasn't spilled the beans on the range of prices we might witness. Currently, prices vary depending on the state, with some states being charged per kWh and others based on plug-in time.

For those of you looking to snag a deal and escape the full brunt of these new charging costs, you can still do so by becoming a Pass+ member. Though, a heads up, the membership fees are getting a bump from $4 to $7 per month. With a 25% saving on charging costs as a member, you might want to break out the calculator and see if it's worth it.

While these new changes might feel a bit like a roller-coaster ride, they seem to be a reflection of the evolving electric vehicle charging landscape. It's a balancing act between convenience, cost, and consumer needs.
