Fisker unveils Ronin - electric 4-door convertible vying for supercar throne

Max McDee, 04 August 2023

Fisker, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, unveiled its latest creations today and we'll start with the Ronin - a four-door, all-electric convertible. This powerhouse seeks to throw down the gauntlet to the likes of the upcoming Tesla Roadster, bringing an exciting new twist to the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market. Ronin, at least on paper, has plenty of potential to compete against Maserati GranTurismo, and even Rimac Nevera may be in its sights.

Founded by the illustrious Henrik Fisker, the company has been through several ups and downs. Remember the Fisker EMotion? The high-end electric sedan that was supposed to mark Fisker's triumphant return to the electric vehicle space? Well, it was quietly shelved to prioritize the development of the Fisker Ocean, an electric SUV that had promised an affordable version at $35,000. That "affordable" version of the Ocean, however, is yet to come to the market, with only its $70,000 variant available for now.

But hey, why dwell on the past when we have an exciting new car right in front of us. This Ronin GT supercar marks a significant pivot for the company, which previously focused on more mainstream EV offerings.

Described as the "world's first four-door electric convertible" by Henrik Fisker, the Ronin is an interesting creature. While its rear butterfly doors may strain the traditional definition of "four-door," there's no denying the novelty of its design. What's more, it claims to accommodate five people, although for now we'll have to take Fisker's word on this since the interior was not revealed during the unveiling.

Performance-wise, Ronin makes some audacious claims. A sub-two-second 0 to 60 mph time puts it in the same league as the yet-to-be-released Tesla Roadster. It puts the Ronin right against the Model S Plaid, Lucid Air Sapphire, and - wait for it - Rimac Nevera and its Italian twin Pininfarina Battista. Heck - it definitely has the upper hand on the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore. Ronin is touting a massive 1,000 horsepower and a targeted range of 600-plus miles. Such specs, if realized, could certainly make the EV industry take notice.

The company's plan to integrate the battery cells into the vehicle's structure mirrors a similar approach taken by Tesla and a few others. When questioned about this, Fisker insisted they're looking at "something different," although no further clarification was offered.

The Ronin is scheduled for release toward the end of 2025. This vehicle's price tag of $385,000 certainly places it in the ultra-luxury category, another departure from Fisker's previous efforts. Whether this strategy will pay off is a story yet to be told.

As an interesting side note, the name "Ronin" refers to samurai warriors who had no lord or master during the feudal period of Japan. With the unveiling of Ronin, Fisker has thrown down an ambitious gauntlet at the feet of premium EV automakers. Although its price tag seems lofty when compared to Maserati, Tesla, or Lucid - it's a bargain against the Rimac.

Come 2025 and the electric supercar market will be a much busier place, with Ferrari and Lamborghini unveiling their first electric creations. Has Fisker got enough clout to demand that kind of money for the Ronin? It all hinges on its promised performance - if the Ronin can indeed achieve the promised sub-2 seconds and step on the toes of the big boys, it'll be a bargain.

I like the Fisker Ocean, but I think the other cars in the lineup kinda fails, especially this one
