Mercedes' factory in Alabama starts producing the EQS SUV

Mercedes-Benz just announced that the production of its luxurious SUV, the EQS SUV, has started in its Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama. This is the company's first EV produced on US soil and it's part of the company's plan to assemble all of its EVs in seven of its factories across three continents until the end of this year. The EQE SUV is going to be produced in the same factory by the end of 2022. Both vehicles will ship worldwide, though.

Mercedes says that the battery for the EQS SUV is being produced in the newly opened Bibb County with 300-meter production line. The battery itself is based on new modular technology and powers up the EQE and EQS sedans as well.

Interestingly enough, the plant in Alabama has been producing big SUVs since 1997 and investments since then amount to about $7 billion. About a million vehicles have rolled off the facility and about 2/3 of those are meant for export.

It's not surprising that the US market will be among the first to get the new EQS SUV and the first shipments should begin by the end of this summer.
