Radical new electric BMW coupe spied testing in Europe

BMW is edging ever closer to releasing its next generation EV lineup based on its Neue Klasse platform. Recently spied during testing in Europe was an electric coupe, which may well be the coolest member of the family of six EV models set to be released by 2027.

This new EV coupe looks nothing like any BMW ever released - production or prototype. The front end, while reminiscent of other Neue Klasse models with its slim headlights and narrow kidney grilles, sits low to the ground, with a classic sports car's profile.

The roofline extends beyond that of a traditional coupe, merging with a raised tailgate to create an unconventional profile. This distinctive design choice, combined with the vehicle's elevated rear, evokes a sense of dynamism and athleticism. If you've been an automotive fan for a while, you'd remember the 1991 Subaru SVX. We probably could have titled this article "BMW remakes Subaru SVX" and be done with it.

The absence of door handles, replaced by touch-sensitive panels on the B-pillars, gives the coupe's even more futuristic aesthetic. Sources suggest that the vehicle could be equipped with four electric in-wheel motors, a departure from the traditional axle-mounted motors commonly found in EVs. If confirmed, it would be a significant shift in BMW's electric drivetrain strategy.

While details about the battery and powertrain remain under wraps for now, it is anticipated that BMW will leverage its partnership with German firm DeepDrive to implement its cutting-edge hub motor technology.

Although BMW's plans for this prototype remain undisclosed, there is speculation that it could potentially give rise to a limited-series vehicle, similar to the iconic i8.
