Hyundai RN24 offers a glimpse into the electrified future of N division
Hyundai's N division, known for its thrilling performance vehicles, has unveiled its latest creation: the RN24. The electric concept car, which was revealed at the N Day 2024 event, serves as a rolling laboratory for the brand's future high-performance EVs.
The RN24 draws inspiration from the world of rally racing, incorporating elements from Hyundai's i20 N Rally1 Hybrid World Rally Championship competitor. The result is a compact, lightweight, and agile EV designed to entertain crowds.
The RN24 uses the same 650 ps dual-motor system found in the Ioniq 5 N. This potent powertrain is paired with a similar 84 kWh battery pack but redesigned to fit a shorter wheelbase (2,580 mm) for enhanced agility.
Hyundai has fitted the RN24 with a newly designed WRC-style suspension setup, complete with rally-spec dampers and high-rigidity subframes. This, combined with a faster steering ratio, promises rally car-like responsiveness and handling.
One of the most intriguing features of the RN24 is its advanced WRC Powertrain Drive Control Logic system. This system allows drivers to fine-tune the vehicle's performance characteristics using steering wheel-mounted controls. Drivers can adjust parameters such as power, acceleration sensitivity, regenerative braking sensitivity, and power balance, giving them a level of control similar to that experienced in Hyundai's WRC rally cars.
The RN24 incorporates several innovative technologies inspired by Hyundai's motorsport experience. "Rally Mode" motor torque control, similar to the system used in the i20 N Rally1, optimizes torque distribution to all four wheels, enhancing traction and control. An electronic handbrake, also inspired by WRC technology, reduces weight and complexity by eliminating the need for traditional hydraulic brake systems.
Visually, the RN24 is a striking machine. Its exoskeleton-style exposed roll cage, inspired by WRC cars, not only enhances safety but also contributes to the vehicle's overall performance and stability. The car sits on Elantra N 19-inch matte black forged wheels and features a spoiler from Hyundai Motorsport's Touring Car Racing (TCR) models for improved aerodynamics. 3D-printed gussets further enhance rigidity and reduce weight.
The RN24 is Hyundai N's vision for the future of high-performance electric vehicles. It's a brave statement that electric cars can be just as exciting and engaging to drive as their gasoline-powered counterparts. While the RN24 is only a concept car (at least for now), it provides an exciting glimpse into the technologies and design elements that may appear in future N production models.
