Refreshed BYD Dolphin revealed by MIIT filing
The BYD Dolphin is getting a refresh for 2025. Revealed on December 9th by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the updated Dolphin sports subtle exterior design tweaks and a new, more powerful electric motor option.
While the Dolphin's overall silhouette stays unchanged, keen eyes will notice updates to the front and rear fascias. The headlights are new, the lower front bumper has been redesigned, and the rear features a revised taillight design with the "BYD" logo replacing the previous "Build Your Dreams" inscription. Subtle changes to the lower rear bumper complete the exterior refresh.
The interesting part is that the refreshed Dolphin has grown a little when compared to its previous Chinese version. It now measures 168.5 inches in length, 69.7 inches in width, and 61.8 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 106.3 inches. This translates to an extra 6.1 inches of length compared to the current model on sale in China, but it is the same as we find in the European version. It seems BYD gave up on the idea of two differently sized vehicles bearing the same name.
The most significant news is the addition of a new, more powerful motor option. Buyers will now have three choices: 70 kW (94 hp), 130 kW (174 hp), and 150 kW (201 hp). The new 130 kW motor provides a middle-ground option. All models will continue to use BYD's Blade LFP battery packs, known for their safety and efficiency.
BYD has not yet released details about battery capacity and range for the updated Dolphin. For reference, the current model offers a 44.928 kWh battery pack with a range of 261 miles in the low-power trim and a 60.48 kWh battery pack with a range of 323 miles in the high-power trim.
The updated BYD Dolphin also offers a range of optional features. The list includes a panoramic sunroof, a suite of radar and camera-based driver assistance systems, a black roof option, rear privacy glass, and different wheel options.
Pricing for the updated Dolphin has not yet been announced, but the current model ranges from RMB 99,800 to RMB 129,800 (approximately $13,700 to $17,900).
