Mercedes-Benz puts luxury S-Class robotaxis on the streets of Abu Dhabi
The future of transportation is coming, and it's arriving in the plush, leather-clad comfort of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The German automaker is jumping headfirst into the robotaxi business, blending the high-tech demands of driverless systems with the uncompromising standards of an S-Class sedan.
Mercedes has partnered with the Chinese software company Momenta to launch a new, driverless shuttle service. The plan is to operate a fleet of these highly automated vehicles, initially in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Local partner Lumo, a subsidiary of technology firm K2, will handle the operations on the ground, having already secured the necessary approval to run autonomous EVs in the UAE. After a successful first test phase in Abu Dhabi, the companies plan to expand the service to other markets around the world.
The entire project is built around the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and its digital architecture. The key enabler is the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, an in-house developed, chip-to-cloud software platform that controls every part of the vehicle, from infotainment to automated driving and charging. This powerful system enables what the industry calls SAE Level 4 automation.
What does Level 4 mean? Simply put, the car can handle all driving tasks entirely on its own - accelerating, braking, and steering - but only within a specific, defined area or under certain conditions. The human driver becomes a passenger and doesn't need to be ready to take over. If the car encounters a situation it can't handle, it will safely pull over and stop, rather than handing control back to a person.
To make this happen, the S-Class test vehicles carry a specialized array of sensors. This includes LiDAR, traditional radar sensors, and cameras. This multi-sensor setup gives the car a constant, complete, and highly detailed picture of the world around it, which is essential for safe, fully automated operation.
The new robotaxi service is just one part of a bigger plan by Mercedes-Benz for autonomous driving. The company has several other SAE Level 4 projects on the go, some of which focus on commercial applications, and others on systems for regular customers buying their own EVs. Mercedes-Benz is also exploring a separate Level 4 ecosystem based on the powerful Nvidia Drive AV platform, building on a long-standing partnership with the technology giant.
Mercedes-Benz was the first international automaker to receive approval to test Level 4 systems on designated city streets and highways in Beijing, China, using the Mercedes-Benz S-Class as the test bed. They also received the world's first internationally valid approval for SAE Level 3 conditionally automated driving, with their DRIVE PILOT system. Level 3 means the driver can take their eyes off the road in specific conditions, but must be ready to take back control when the system asks them to. The DRIVE PILOT system will be upgraded to operate at speeds up to 81 mph within the next five years.
The company sees the S-Class as the perfect car for this "chauffeur experience." By using their flagship model, the company will offer a premium, worry-free way to travel, turning time spent in traffic into time to relax or work. The partnership between Mercedes-Benz, Momenta, and Lumo is a key moment in the rise of automation. As EVs become the norm, the battleground for manufacturers is shifting from just the powertrain to the software and the automated experience.
