XPeng unveils refreshed G9 electric SUV

Max McDee, 20 September 2023

In a bold move to redefine its market position, XPeng has launched a newer and more affordable version of its flagship G9 SUV. The redesigned G9 is built on the robust framework of XPeng's latest SEPA (Smart Electric Platform Architecture) and is set to undercut its predecessor by a remarkable RMB 46,000 ($6,300).

At a glitzy launch event in Dunhuang, Gansu province of northwest China, He Xiaopeng, XPeng's chairman and CEO, unveiled the new G9 with great fanfare. Available in five distinct versions, the vehicle now starts at a price of RMB 263,900 (approximately $36,200), a significant drop from the RMB 309,900 ($42,500) tag of its earlier model.

You'd think a reduction in price might imply a cutback on features or performance. Not so with the G9. The SUV's core capabilities revolve around XPeng's innovative SEPA architecture. This platform enables rapid charging capabilities, allowing for a range increase of 81 miles in a mere five minutes, and even quicker charging times when using the company's S4 superchargers.

The previous iteration of the G9 was introduced in September 2022. Initially priced at RMB 309,900, it appeared to be a game changer. However, consumers found its intricate configuration baffling, dimming its initial glow. XPeng swiftly reacted just two days post-launch, streamlining its options to enhance customer clarity.

A trip down memory lane shows the older G9 with eight versions after adjustments:

Model RMB price Converted price
XPeng G9 570 Plus 309,900 $42,500
XPeng G9 570 Pro 329,900 $45,200
XPeng G9 570 Max 349,900 $48,000
XPeng G9 702 Pro 349,900 $48,000
XPeng G9 702 Max 369,900 $51,000
XPeng G9 650 Performance Pro 399,900 $55,000
XPeng G9 650 Performance Max 419,900 $57,500
XPeng G9 650 Launch Edition 469,900 $64,500

In contrast, the rejuvenated G9 offers five versions, mirroring the offerings of XPeng G6 SUV launched in late June. The prices of the revamped G9 are:

Model RMB price Converted price
New XPeng G9 570 Pro 263,900 $36,200
New XPeng G9 702 Pro 283,900 $39,000
New XPeng G9 570 Max 289,900 $39,700
New XPeng G9 702 Max 309,900 $42,500
New XPeng G9 650 Max 359,900 $49,500

Doing the math, this marks a hefty reduction of RMB 66,000 ($9,000) when compared to the older G9 570 Pro's launch price of RMB 329,900. Now, that's what we can call a notable markdown!

With the intention of keeping earlier G9 buyers from feeling the burn of this price slash, XPeng's playing it smart. They're dishing out RMB 300 million in perks - that's $41.1 million. This largesse includes a decade-long warranty, free internet for life (yes, for life!), and a cool 50,000 XPeng credits.

The G9 has had its ups and downs, selling a record 4,020 units in December 2022, but facing declining sales in subsequent months. But with this aggressive repositioning, XPeng aims to make the G9 the best-selling all-electric SUV in its price bracket.

Mr. He wasn't shy in sharing the company's aspirations, declaring that the revamped G9 is XPeng's "new offensive" to present consumers with the most formidable smart all-electric SUV in the RMB 300,000 ($41,000) price range.

The SEPA 2.0, XPeng's signature architecture, was first incorporated in the G6 model. This platform has set new standards in the electric vehicle realm, especially with its rapid-charging capabilities.

Why bother with EVs when in China you can buy much better Li auto PHEV? EVs are losing 40-50% value in just one year of usage.
