Volkswagen e-Up! production will cease by the end of the year

Vlad, 11 October 2023

Earlier this year, Renault killed the small Zoe EV, and now Volkswagen is getting ready to do the same to its own small EV, the e-Up!. This has seen two generations across its decade-long production run, but its time is now finally Up! (pardon the easy pun).

The last e-Up! models will be manufactured at VW's plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, at some point before the end of this year. After that, there will be no more e-Up! (and the ICE model is being discontinued too).

VW says individual configurations for the e-Up! are no longer possible, but if you really, really want one, you can contact your local VW dealer for information about which pre-configured cars are still in stock.

Volkswagen has no direct replacement for the e-Up! for the near future, which makes this discontinuation all the more baffling. We assume the sales numbers haven't been great lately, since this is a pretty old design. In 2025, VW will launch the ID.1 which will act as a spiritual successor to the e-Up!, but we're still pretty far away from that moment. In the meantime, those who want the tiniest possible city EV will have to look elsewhere.

Sadly, when it comes to E-UP / Citigo EV the quality of these cars were really subpar - in a way making something like Dacia Spring downright luxurious and incredibly reliable in comparison.

They can't compete with China.

Can you believe it? First Renault kills off the Zoe, now Volkswagen is axing the Up. These small electric cars might not have been the most popular, but come on, it's a sad day for the EV community. What's happening to the world?
