VinFast VF3 and enigmatic EV concept headed for CES

Max McDee, 29 December 2023

VinFast, the Vietnamese auto giant determined to crack the American market, is ready for a big reveal at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The spotlight will be on their budget-friendly VF3 electric vehicle and a mysterious new EV concept that aims to keep the promise alive.

In a surprising and rather brave move, VinFast plans to unveil the pint-sized VF3, a compact EV set to potentially disrupt the market with a price tag under $20,000 before tax credits and any other incentives. If those credits come into play, we could be looking at a jaw-dropping $12,500 - a figure that would make it the most affordable car in the United States by a significant margin. Add to it some local state-level incentives and you may be looking at an EV that's cheaper than some electric bicycles.

The VF3, however, faces an uphill battle in a country that traditionally favors larger vehicles. This diminutive EV, measuring just 122.4 inches in length, is even smaller than a three-door Mini Cooper. Despite its size, VinFast is banking on the rugged style and, notably, strong support from its dealers who believe in the potential of the compact EV market in the US.

One can't help but be intrigued by the 2024 CES extravaganza, where the VF3's true potential will be unveiled. Will Americans warm up to the idea of a pocket-sized electric chariot, or will it be a tough sell in a market where the Ford Explorer is classed as a medium-sized SUV?

Joining the VF3 on the CES stage is a mysterious EV concept, shrouded in secrecy. While details are scant, a teaser image hints at a vehicle taller and more robust than VinFast's VF8. The intrigue around this concept adds an extra layer of anticipation to the event.

VinFast doesn't stop there, though. Alongside the VF3 and the mysterious concept, the VF9, a full-size SUV, will grace the CES showcase. The Vietnamese automaker is diversifying its lineup further with the inclusion of its DrgnFly range of electric bikes, offering attendees a chance for test rides.

As VinFast continues to expand its dealer network, it's concurrently working on establishing its manufacturing presence in the US - a move that could enhance the quality of its offerings. Notably, the company's customer-centric approach involves compensating US customers for breakdowns, a strategy aimed at fostering stronger ties with consumers. Despite its ambitious strides, VinFast's foray into the American market has encountered its fair share of bumps. The upcoming EV concept aims to inject some excitement into the brand's journey, and the anticipation is palpable.
