Tesla Model Y, S and X get a drop in range estimates

Max McDee, 05 January 2024

Tesla adjusted the range estimates for some of its vehicles, as posted on its US website. The range reductions apply to the Model Y Long Range and Performance models, Model X Plaid and Model S Plaid, and while some may not be groundbreaking, they're certainly a step closer to what you can expect in reality.

The Model Y Long Range, previously boasting 330 miles of range, now stands at a more down-to-earth 310 miles. Similarly, the Model Y Performance has seen its range drop from 303 miles to 285 miles. Meanwhile, the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, introduced in October, remains unaffected, still promising 260 miles of range.

The biggest mover is the Tesla Model S Plaid, which previously boasted 396 miles of range on the standard 19” wheels. That number has been reduced by a whopping 37 miles - to 359 miles. The Model X Plaid on the other hand, sees only minimal reduction from the previous 333 miles down to 326 miles.

Why the change? Well, Tesla's tendency to overstate its range estimates has been no secret. While hitting EPA numbers is achievable with a feather-light foot on the pedal and a little help from the friendly wind, Tesla tends to fall short in real-world scenarios, lagging behind its competitors.

EPA testing allows car manufacturers some wiggle room in adjusting their range estimates. Some even voluntarily understate the numbers to ensure drivers are not disappointed. Tesla, on the other hand, has always been on the generous side.

Now, it's worth noting that these changes do not apply at the moment to the Model 3 and it leaves us wondering if the smallest Tesla will follow suit, since all the models faced the same overstatement issue. Correction in range estimates for other Tesla vehicles could be on the horizon. In fact, Cybertruck desperately needs a reality check - its first real-life range test was quite a shocker.

In the end, fixating on range alone misses the bigger picture. The key is driving efficiently (slowing down a bit if needed) and ensuring an ample network of DC fast charging stations. As we shift our focus to these critical aspects, the exact range numbers become less of a concern.

So, while Tesla's range adjustments may not be earth-shattering, they serve as a reminder that EV specs are not set in stone. Rather than obsessing over arbitrary numbers, let's keep our eyes on the road, embrace efficiency, and continue expanding the charging infrastructure.
