Tesla's in-car visualizations are about to get slicker

Vlad, 14 August 2025

A Tesla hacker took a deep dive into one of Tesla's recent firmware versions, more specifically the 2025.20 for the Model S and Model X and found evidence that the company might be switching over to the Unreal Engine to power its in-car visualizations. That includes the Autopilot and FSD features that also offer visualization on the screens.

Even though Epic Games' Unreal Engine was originally meant for game development, the studio behind recently started pushing it to car makers as well. Rivian, Ford, GMC, Volvo and Lotus are some of the brands that already use Unreal Engine for their visualizations.

The firmware findings refer to Model S and X configurations with AMD chips, though, so not all Teslas will switch from the Godot engine to the Unreal Engine right away.

Even though the Godot engine is simple, capable and efficient, the Unreal Engine will likely deliver much more detailed visualizations. Additionally, the new engine will likely allow Tesla to upgrade to 3D visualizations on Google Maps and Apple Maps.
