Toyota claims its hydrogen-fueled Hilux is a leap towards a cleaner tomorrow

Max McDee, 06 September 2023

Toyota has unveiled its Hilux Hydrogen Fuel Cell Prototype. Constructed at the Burnaston vehicle plant in Derby, England, this project witnesses collaboration among various consortium partners and is supported by UK government funds. Toyota has a determined plan to roll out 10 such prototypes before the curtains fall on this year.

The intriguing powertrain of this Hilux borrows parts from the Toyota Mirai, claiming a promising range of 365 miles between those hydrogen pit stops. Now, for those pinning it against conventional fuel standards, the turbodiesel 2.8-liter engine of the Hilux boasts about 715 miles before it's begging for a refill. That's nearly twice the distance, but who's counting?

The hydrogen tanks have snugly settled between the frame rails, precisely where the cabin traditionally sits. The fuel cell components are neatly squeezed under the hood, and the battery finds its place at the rear.

A quick trip down memory lane reveals that this project sprouted its first roots in early 2022. However, it wasn't until July 1, 2022, that the gears really began to turn in terms of design and development. Fast forward to June 2023, and the first prototype was under construction.

Toyota isn't just building these prototypes for show and tell. The auto giant wants to ensure that this model truly embraces the Hilux's rugged lineage. From safety and functionality to enduring the test of time, each prototype will be rigorously examined. The broader vision? To grasp the potential goldmine and pitfalls of fuel-cell-powered pickups.

Speaking of electric trucks, did you hear about Toyota's electric Hilux Revo BEV Concept that made its debut in December 2022? Well, if you didn't, you didn't miss much because Toyota played it coy, revealing zilch about the truck's specifications. Akio Toyoda, during the unveiling, remarked, "BEVs are not the only way to achieve the world’s carbon neutrality goals." A not-so-subtle nod to hydrogen fuel cells, perhaps?

Interestingly, 2022 seemed to be a pivotal year for Toyota. The company also hinted at constructing a light-duty pickup powered by hydrogen fuel cell, joining forces with Isuzu and Hino. Yet, the timeline for this model's launch remains shrouded in mystery.

If rumors are to be believed, Toyota might be mulling over introducing a fuel-cell-powered Land Cruiser. We've also got whispers about plug-in hybrid and all-electric versions. However, your guess is as good as ours when it comes to which of these will see the light of day.

If you’re hearing about fuel cells for the first time, they generate electricity by merging hydrogen with oxygen, releasing only water and heat as byproducts. Toyota Mirai, from which the Hilux's powertrain borrows parts, was one of the world's first hydrogen fuel cell vehicles available for commercial purchase.
