Volkswagen ID.7 Pro real life range test

Vik Braykov, 22 May 2024

Volkswagen premiered its first fully electric sedan with the ID.7 with the hope that it will become the electric equivalent of its best-selling Passat. The ID.7 offers unique styling, loads of cabin space, modern tech and great driving characteristics. On paper the ID.7 sure sounds like a fantastic proposition.

Our detailed review of this Volkswagen ID.7 Pro is coming soon to determine if it's as good in the real life, but now we’ll focus on its efficiency and range. Its shape enables a low drag coefficient, which should bring great efficiency. The 77 kWh battery pack is then expected to deliver excellent range. However even if the ID.7 is a sedan, it offers a lot of headroom and high ground clearance, making it closer in height to some crossover models than sedans, which might hold it back.

We drove our usual test routes, doing the same track both ways at constant speeds at the same place as with every other car we test. The ambient temperature while testing the ID.7 Pro was 63°F, which is nearly optimal, giving the ID.7 Pro a slight bonus in the end results.

At our lowest testing speed of 37 mph the ID.7 Pro proves to be highly efficient. It needs only 5.6 mi/kWh, which is fantastic for its size. The fact that power only goes to the rear wheels certainly helps, but we won't know how much until the upcoming GTX version arrives.

When you speed up to 56 mph the ID.7 Pro stands its own against its direct competitors. Only the Ioniq 6 achieves slightly better results in that category, but the overall result is very good for the segment.

At the highest testing speed of 81 mph the ID.7 once again has lower consumption than the competition. Similarly sized and shaped vehicles like the Mercedes EQE or the Hyundai Ioniq 6 need more energy to travel quickly and if you’re going to regularly drive on a highway, the ID.7 Pro makes a really strong case for itself.

The Volkswagen ID.7 Pro offers fantastic efficiency, which is a great start if it's to become the next Passat. Volkswagen aimed to created a perfect family hauler and the great range is an excellent starting place.
