Volkswagen ID.4 GTX range test
The Volkswagen ID.4 GTX is the latest car we’ve got for review and we are currently busy putting it through its paces. And while the full set of trials will take a while longer to complete we are now done with the range test, so we figured we might share the findings of that one with you.
The ID.4 GTX version comes with a 82 kWh battery of which 77 kWh are available to use. That’s among the highest capacities in the price range and its WLTP rating of about 515km sounds very promising. In fact that’s after the range penalty that comes with the dual motor AWD drive of the 250kW GTX model - the 128 kW Pro promises to go 10% longer per charge.
Anyway, herе’s how the ID.4 GTX performed in our tests. They were carried at 17°C, which is just a few degrees below the optimal temperature.
At the lowest 37 mph speed the VW ID.4 GTX exceeded its WLTP rating as most cars do. That's to be expected since the WLTP testing protocol involves a lot of stopping and going and our runs are carried at a steady speed. Still the efficiency of the ID.4 here is alright and you should expect to get excellent range when driving around town.
At 56 mph the ID.4 GTX falls back a bit, with Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Tesla Model Y offering lower consumption despite being significantly larger cars. Still the 315 miles achieved nothing to frown at here.
Finally, we come to the 81 mph or highway speeds range test. The VW ID.4 GTX posted the second highest consumption we've seen, the Mercedes-Benz EQE AMG 43 4Matic being the only one to do worse. However, the large battery pack enabled the ID.4 to achieve a 210 miles range - just edging the Model Y Long Range and the Ioniq 6.

On the highway, my Ioniq 6 is reading at least 7km/kWh. Driving inner city, i can reach up to 13 km/kWh. All in spring season. I think the result is biased.

Hi, W will shortly order a 2024 ID 4 GTX. We've driven several cars and the ID 4 (2023) model is just a little above the Ionic 5 for comfort and a decent amount of tech related to the range and other features which come standard with the car. ...

I can kinda confirm the numbers for the 90 km/h speed results. Mine does around 470 km when both the heater and the AC are off.
