VW reportedly cancels development of the ID. Life affordable EV

Vlad, 21 February 2022

Last year at the IAA in Munich, VW unveiled the ID. Life concept, which was supposed to be turning into an actual EV in the next few years, as part of the German maker's plans to expand its EV range by 2027. The car that the ID. Life concept was going to become was supposed to cost around €20,000, which is very cheap for an EV these days.

But - according to a new report from Automobilwoche, that's not happening anymore. The ID. Life has been shelved, and the design team behind it is apparently now working on a new, even more modern design, that will captivate young customers with its multimedia and connectivity prowess.

This new design will be known as the ID.2 when it launches in 2025. Subsequent variations of it will be created - the ID.2 Urban and, in 2026, the ID.2 X, which is a small SUV in the style of the T-Cross.

As the name implies, the ID.2 should be smaller and cheaper than the ID.3 which is already available, but it's unclear what the exact differences will be.

VW plans to show the ID.6 in a few weeks, a model that will be released next year. The ID.6 that's already sold in China will be known elsewhere as the ID.6 X, according to the same report. In 2024 you can also expect to see a station wagon version of the ID.6.

Then later on, in 2026, we'll see the ID.7 and ID.7 X, while the timeline is less clear for the ID.8. This should be an EV successor to the Touareg, but this might appear in late 2027.

Hopefully VW won't forget its "people's car" roots and decide to price the ID.2 more decently than its other models, but that remains to be seen.
