VW unveils the ID.4 GTX with dual-motor all-wheel drive and 299 hp

Vlad, 28 April 2021

VW has just fully unveiled the latest member of its ID family of electric cars, and this one is by far the most capable yet. We're talking about the ID.4 GTX, and yes, "GTX" is supposed to make you think "GTI". The company dubs it "its first fully electric high-performance model", with the new GTX product brand "bringing new and intelligent sportiness to the world of electric mobility".

In some ways, it does deliver on that implication, arriving on the scene with dual-motor all-wheel drive and 299 hp, both being firsts for VW's electric stable. The power allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 6.2 seconds. The top speed is limited to 180 km/h (111 mph), which definitely takes away some of the fun of a "GTI" (sorry, GTX).

Aside from the new powertrain, the ID.4 GTX also has its very own unique colorway, which includes newly designed bumpers, and a 3D LED tail light cluster with brake lights that form an X. The roof and rear spoiler are black, while the roof frame bar is high-gloss anthracite. The interior has new colors too, with leatherette inserts in the doors in a dark shade of "X-Blue", "which represents sustainability" (cue eye roll here). And of course there's red "racing" stitching all over, because GTI! (sorry, GTX)

Speaking of GTX, badges! GTX badges on the steering wheel, sill panel trims, and - in perforated form - at the top of the front seat backrests.

Everything else about the car seems to have remained unchanged, and we're assuming that includes the battery and charging specs. The ID.4 GTX will become available in Germany this summer starting at €50,415, with customers being able to apply for a net grant of €7,500.
