Xiaomi EV Tech launch scheduled for December 28
Xiaomi EV, the automotive venture of the tech giant Xiaomi, is teasing a technology launch event on December 28, putting the spotlight on innovation rather than product releases. The announcement, made via Xiaomi EV's newly minted Weibo account, comes as the first glimpse into the company's automotive aspirations.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun clarified that the event would focus solely on technology, dispelling earlier rumors about the imminent debut of Xiaomi's first electric vehicle, the SU7. With only 68,000 followers on Weibo, Xiaomi EV seems to be building its online presence strategically, perhaps taking a page from the multi-event playbook of traditional car launches.
Breaking away from the conventional smartphone launch approach, Lei Jun emphasized the separation of technology-related events from product launches. This divergence may raise eyebrows, leaving enthusiasts wondering if Xiaomi's approach is a calculated gamble or a well-thought-out strategy to build anticipation.
Speculations surrounding the SU7 initially thought to be unveiled on December 28, have been put to rest. Xiaomi appears to be following a phased launch strategy common in the automotive industry, where events leading up to the official launch generate buzz and, subsequently, higher initial orders.
If size matters, Xiaomi's first EV model, the SU7, certainly stands out. With the vehicle measuring 196.7 inches in length, 77.3 inches in width, and a height ranging between 56.7 inches and 57.3 inches, the sedan dwarfs both Tesla's Model 3 and Nio's ET5 which initially it was meant to compete with. The wheelbase of 118 inches adds to the spacious allure and positions the car against competitors such as Tesla Models S or Nio ET7.
The Xiaomi SU7's battery options, provided by Chinese giants BYD and CATL, hint at the company's commitment to range and efficiency. With capacities of 73.6 kWh and 101 kWh, Xiaomi covers a broad spectrum of driving needs.
The 73.6-kWh battery offers commendable CLTC ranges of 390 miles and 415 miles depending on powertrain choice, while the powerhouse 101 kWh pack pushes boundaries with an impressive 466 miles and 497 miles range.
Xiaomi's CEO, Lei Jun, expressed ambitious aspirations for the SU7, declaring a pursuit of victory in the competitive electric vehicle landscape. In a recent interview with CCTV, Lei Jun outlined his determination to make Xiaomi's mark in the automotive realm.
