XPeng launches the G6 EREV to tackle range anxiety

XPeng Motors released a new version of its popular G6 coupe SUV, and it might change how people think about electric cars. Many EVs rely entirely on a battery, but this new model is an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, or EREV. It uses a small gasoline engine to act as a portable generator - the car still drives using electricity, but it can create its own power on the go.

The XPeng G6 EREV looks almost exactly like its fully electric brother. It keeps the sporty, curved roof and sleek lines that make it look fast even when it is standing still. It measures 187.8 inches long and 75.6 inches wide. Under the hood, things get interesting. It uses a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that produces 110 kW of power and works quietly to charge the 55.8 kWh battery or provide juice directly to the 218 kW electric motor that moves the car.

Range anxiety is a big reason why some people still hesitate to buy electric cars, but XPeng wants to fix that. On a full charge, the new G6 can travel 267 miles using only the battery. When you add a full 60-liter tank of gas for the generator, the total driving range jumps to a massive 1,059 miles. That is a lot of driving before you ever have to stop for fuel or a plug. Even if you do need to charge, the 800V system allows the car to add 195 miles of range in just 12 minutes.

Inside the car, XPeng packed in some very smart technology. The G6 EREV uses an AI system called VLA, which stands for Vision-Language-Action. This "brain" has a huge amount of computing power to help the car see and react to the world around it. It can automatically brake or steer away from danger at speeds up to 81 mph. It even has a special stability system to keep the car steady if a tire blows out while driving as fast as 112 mph.

The ride should be quite smooth thanks to the car's high-tech suspension. It uses a double-wishbone setup in the front and a five-link system in the back. XPeng also added adaptive dampers and a hydraulic bushing system called "Taiji." These parts work together to soak up bumps in the road, making sure passengers do not feel every pebble. For a car that starts at RMB 186,800 (about $27,080), this is a lot of hardware for the money.

XPeng is offering some deals to get people behind the wheel quickly. If customers order by March 31, 2026, they can get incentives worth up to RMB 33,200 ($4,810). These perks include trade-in credits and subsidies that make the final price even lower. The aggressive pricing should help the XPeng G6 compete with other popular Chinese EVs. XPeng is clearly trying to win back customers after its delivery numbers dropped by nearly half compared to last year.

Switching to EREVs is a smart business move for XPeng. Many drivers like the feeling of driving electric cars but worry about finding chargers during cold winters or on long trips. By adding a gasoline generator, XPeng offers a safety net. The car uses about 13.9 kWh of electricity for every 62 miles, which is quite efficient for a vehicle of this size.

The XPeng G6 EREV is an attempt to dominate the SUV market under the RMB 200,000 price point. It combines the speed of fast charging with the long distance of a hybrid. As more people look for versatile EVs, this coupe SUV provides a middle ground. It will be interesting to see if this "portable generator" approach helps XPeng beat its rivals.
