XPeng P5 orders suspended in Europe

Max McDee, 22 June 2022

XPeng only recently launched the P5 model in four European countries, but it is now forced to stop all the reservations and pre-orders. According to the official statement from the company, the decision was made because of the global supply chain issues. XPeng, just like all other automakers, is faced with prolonged component delivery delays, increased costs due to delays and scarcity of supplies.

The company has realized that the initial delivery times for the XPeng P5 in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden were no longer achievable and with no real progress made on the subject there is no near-term solution available. Rather than forcing the customers to wait for an unspecified time and constantly extending the delivery time, XPeng decided that suspending the orders is the only honest choice.

Customers who have already placed their orders are being contacted by the company and most likely will have a choice either to cancel the order or carry on waiting but the company stressed it cannot guarantee delivery times any longer. Another option available for the customers is to swap their P5 for brand new XPeng P7 with deliveries available early next year.

XPeng’s production and deliveries for the Chinese market are unaffected with all its models including P5 being delivered on schedule. Only the vehicles manufactured for export are facing delays.

With deliveries of P7 scheduled for next year it is most likely the P5 will follow some time after making the prospect of ownership quite distant. XPeng G9 is going to enter production in late September this year, but it's unlikely we'll see it in Europe soon. For now the company will focus on P7 to make sure the European customers get high quality service.

It looks like XPeng has made a decision to prioritize P5 deliveries for the Chinese market and is trying to promote the P7 instead. There is no difference between Chinese and European P5 models and with it not facing any delays in China it does sound like an excuse to sell more of it there rather than in Europe. At least the company has communicated its plans early and although customers will be disappointed, it is far better than keeping them waiting forever - unlike some other EV manufacturers.
