Pininfarina Pura Vision unveiled - electric SUV with a luxurious Italian touch

Ah, Italy, the land of pizza, pasta, and... cutting-edge electric SUVs. It seems Automobili Pininfarina, the Italian creator of the hyper GT Battista, is setting out to add the latter to the country's list of iconic exports. The game-changer? The firm's Pura Vision concept, an electric luxury utility vehicle (e-LUV) that promises to reshape our expectations of what a luxury electric vehicle can be.

Paolo Dellachà, the CEO of Pininfarina, cheekily referred to the Pura Vision as "the bridge from our present to an exciting new chapter," fueling speculation that the concept could significantly influence the brand's upcoming production cars. And while there's a certain je ne sais quoi about Dellachà's poetic sentiment, it's clear that Pininfarina is not playing around when it comes to revolutionizing the e-LUV landscape.

Back in 2020, rumors were swirling about Pininfarina's plans for an SUV that was meant to give Ferrari's Purosangue a run for its money. We've been waiting ever since, with bated breath and quite a few espressos, for this mystery vehicle to make its grand entrance into the world. And even though the Pura Vision has not yet - if ever - hit production, it serves as a pretty tempting hors d'oeuvre for what the company has in store.

The Pura Vision is as luxurious as it is dramatic. In other words, it's quintessentially Italian. Designed under the new chief design officer Dave Amantea, the concept showcases bladed headlights and a silhouette shaped from lightweight materials, such as carbon fiber. Its low front end and flared arches are a nod to the iconic Cisitalia 202, a design so impressive it was the first vehicle to earn a spot in the Museum of Modern Art's collection in New York.

Inside, it's like stepping onto a luxury yacht – with an eco-friendly twist. There's a clear focus on functionality and space, making it a departure from the compact, driver-centric and record-winning Battista. The floating front seats, the wave-shaped rear bench, and the low roofline are all designed to provide a luxury cruiser's comfort and a sports car's exhilarating feel. According to interior design director Francesco Cundari, this setup provides a "cocoon" of a cabin that's "light, airy, and welcoming."

And then, of course, there's the glass roof. Not just any glass roof, mind you, but one that's inspired by the 1953 Alfa Romeo 6C 3000 Superflow concept. This elegant piece of architecture aims to make passengers feel connected to their surroundings. The added benefit? It also helps to control the interior temperature, ensuring the cabin stays comfortable in any weather. Who needs an Italian villa when you have an e-LUV?

Of course, a concept vehicle wouldn't be complete without some fun bells and whistles. The Pura Vision comes equipped with a rising central touchscreen, speakers fitted into the headrests, and - for the wine lovers out there - an integrated wine cooler. And no, this isn't an April Fool's joke.

While details about the Pura Vision's powertrain remain a secret, the concept shown in 2020 had a 1,000 hp electric powertrain, potentially promising an impressive 0-62 mph in around 3.0 seconds, a top speed of 186 mph, and a range of up to 340 miles.

If the Pura Vision concept is a "bridge" to Pininfarina's future, we can't wait to see what's on the other side. The e-LUV makes its public debut at the Monterey Car Week in California later this month, and it's ready to give us a taste of the future of electric luxury.
