Lamborghini's electric surprise

Max McDee, 17 August 2023

In a world where supercars make our hearts race, Lamborghini, the Italian automaker synonymous with flair, audacity, and, let’s be honest, a pinch of extravagance, has decided to throw a curveball. Ahead of its August 18 debut, the brand is teasing an upcoming electric vehicle which - surprise, surprise - looks like it might be a crossover.

Now, for the purists out there, we can hear the collective gasps. A Lamborghini that might resemble an SUV? But, hold onto your driving gloves. This move might not be as audacious as it seems. Remember the Urus? That beefed-up Lambo SUV that somehow outsold the iconic Aventador and Huracan combined last year? Yeah, that one. It seems Lamborghini might be onto something here.

But let’s get back to the EV teaser. What do we know? Well, first off, it's got some really eye-catching split lighting. Those slender LED headlights are an innovative departure from the typical, hinting that Lamborghini isn’t just switching up the fuel source; they're rethinking design from the ground up. Add in those robust tires and sharp angular accents, and it seems Lamborghini's designers have been working overtime.

Not to get stuck in the past, but remember the Estoque concept? That Lamborghini’s take on the Maserati Quattroporte was way ahead of its times. The prototype's design reminds us a little bit of that. There's that bold windscreen that smoothly transitions into a stretched-out roof, giving it a slick, futuristic look. Oh, and let’s not forget that expansive greenhouse, intriguing beltline, and slender A-pillars that seem to be part of the package.

What's under the hood—or wherever they're stashing the electric motors in this thing—is still anyone's guess. Lamborghini, ever the tease, has been tight-lipped about the juicy details. However, they did hint that this new EV will be "something new and truly thrilling." Vague? Yes. Intriguing? Absolutely.

The big news doesn't stop there. This prototype isn’t just a one-off showpiece. Lamborghini confirms that it's a precursor to their much-anticipated fourth model. So, if the teaser's anything to go by, this EV crossover might not be a mere fleeting fantasy. It’s set to hit production before we welcome the next decade, and Lamborghini’s aiming high, positioning it "at the top of its segment" with promises of "remarkable performance."

If you didn’t know, the name 'Lamborghini' originally belonged to a tractor-manufacturing company in the 1950s. Quite a leap from tractors to supercars and now, potentially, electric crossovers. While the world waits with bated breath for the full reveal, it's clear Lamborghini isn’t afraid to venture into uncharted territory. If this teaser is anything to go by, the brand’s electric future seems to be as dynamic and audacious as its gasoline past. And about time, we may add.

Crossover? This will basically be Lamborghini's Cayenne. Everyone will cry that it isn't a "real" Lamborghini, then it will go on to become its best selling model ever.
