Lanzador brings Lamborghini into the electric age

Max McDee, 21 August 2023

It's 2023, and Lamborghini is still (or at least it was) committed to combustion engines, only recently claiming that the EV tech is not ready for the raging bull. Yet, with the unveiling of its new concept car, the Lanzador, during the Monterey Car Week, the company shows its believe we are quickly getting there.

Every Lamborghini vehicle ever released evokes emotions, and Lanzador is no different. The Italian maker is keen to point out this isn't just about going green, but also about redefining what it means to be a high-performance vehicle in the 21st century.

In essence, the Lanzador is Lamborghini's love letter to electricity. It’s jam-packed with two electric motors – one for each axle. While this ensures all-wheel drive, it also promises efficiency across all terrains and driving styles. The peak power? Just a bit over a megawatt. Who's even counting, right? We already have plenty of +1,000 hp EVs out there, so we wouldn't expect Lamborghini to lag behind.

Now, let’s address the so-called "Ultra GT" segment Lamborghini's CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, hinted at. What does an "Ultra GT" mean? Just what we needed, another vehicle segment to wrap our heads around.

For the driving aficionados out there, Lamborghini's latest driving dynamics control system, Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (or LDVI for those who don't have the time), will let drivers tweak control systems to their heart's desires. Every turn, every acceleration, and every touch of the brake pedal can now be a reflection of one's personality. As if driving a Lamborghini wasn't exciting enough.

A spacious and comfortable interior, paired with the brand's "Feel like a pilot" approach, adds a touch of the future. Apart from Urus, which clearly influenced the Lanzador, this new Ultra GT is the only Lamborghini to offer room for more than two people - and it can even fit their luggage too. It still is a two-door coupe, and just like the Huracan Sterrato, is not afraid of going off the beaten track.

Lamborghini has opted for sustainable yet high-quality materials like Merino wool and regenerated carbon fiber for the interiors. Even the foam in those cushy sports seats is made from 3D-printed recycled fibers. Now, that’s a step up from merely tossing a recycling bin in the office corner.

While the Lanzador is still a concept, Lamborghini's vision is becoming clear: an electric future without sacrificing luxury and performance. Oh, and since this is Lamborghini, a very limited series of the Lanzador is heading for production. Who said concept vehicles are destined only for the show floors?
