Tesla Cybertruck leak reveals payload capacity

Max McDee, 22 November 2023

Tesla Cybertruck has been a topic of intrigue and debate since its first reveal four years ago. Thanks to more official specs recently unveiled, we now get a slightly better idea of what this edgy electric pickup has to offer and how it stacks up against its more traditional competitors.

One of the standout features of the Tesla Cybertruck is its payload capacity. With a hefty 2,500 lb payload, it has the muscle to carry a significant load in its bed. In comparison the Silverado 1500 and F-150 can only manage 2,260 lb and 2,455 lb, respectively, depending on the engine and configuration. Even the Ram 1500 falls short, maxing out at 2,300 lb. It's a clear win for the Cybertruck in the payload department.

But what about electric rivals? The F-150 Lightning can lug 2,235 lb with the Standard Range battery and a mere 1,952 lb with the Extended Range pack. The Silverado EV fares even worse, with a paltry 1,300 lb payload. The Rivian R1T, known for its capabilities, manages 1,760 lb, while the GMC Hummer EV Pickup falls behind with 1,300 lb. The Cybertruck's payload capacity clearly stands head and shoulders above its electric competition then.

When it comes to towing, the Cybertruck can pull 11,000 lb. While this is no small feat, it falls short of its gas-powered counterparts. The Ford F-150 can haul up to 13,500 lb behind its facelifted body, while the Silverado 1500 manages a slightly lower 13,300 lb. The Ram 1500 isn't far behind at 11,580 lb, still surpassing the Cybertruck's towing capacity. Even the Rivian R1T matches the Cybertruck in towing power.

Tesla Cybertruck specs reveal impressive load capacity

One aspect where electric trucks often fall short is range when towing. As any seasoned road tripper knows, long journeys can become a logistical challenge with frequent charging stops. ICE-powered trucks have an advantage in this regard, as their range remains relatively stable even when towing heavy loads. The Cybertruck, despite its impressive specs, faces the same challenge, making it less practical for long-distance towing compared to its gas-powered rivals.

As we look into the specs of the Tesla Cybertruck, it's essential to note that more information is expected to surface on November 30. The Cybertruck will come in two configurations, dual-motor and tri-motor, each with varying capability levels. According to documents from the NHTSA, these models will have different gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR), ranging from 8,001 lb to 10,000 lb.

Tesla Cybertruck specs reveal impressive load capacity

Tesla Cybertruck is undoubtedly a game-changer in the electric pickup world, boasting impressive payload that outshines its electric competitors. However, it faces stiff competition from traditional trucks when it comes to towing power and practicality on long journeys.
