BMW offers $1000 discount it you dump your Tesla

In its latest attempt to boost its EV sales BMW is resorting to an unusual gambit – luring existing EV owners away from their current brands with a cash bonus.

The electric car market growth slowed down a bit lately, but few existing owners would even consider going back to an ICE car. So BMW believes it can maintain its own growth by making owners of other brnads switch.

If you own a Tesla, Rivian, Audi, or several other popular EV brands, BMW will hand you a cool $1000 for switching to a BMW i4, i5, or iX. The deal doesn't require you to trade in your old electric chariot.

Of course, there's a catch – bigger savings are tied to BMW's pricier models. The electric iX SUV, for example, currently comes with almost $10,000 in discounts. Throw in the 'Conquest Program' bonus, and that could land you nearly $11,000 in total savings!

BMW is keeping it simple for interested EV owners. The eligible vehicles are a who's who of the electric car world: Tesla, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Polestar, Rivian, Lucid, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and VW ID.4. If you're looking to switch teams, BMW will sweeten the deal with a $1000 bonus for taking home an i4, i5 or iX. For now, this offer is limited to those in Western US states, but keep an eye out – it might spread further before the April 1, 2024 deadline.

There’s no doubt, BMW has produced some decent electric contenders - we've praised a couple in our reviews. But this move seems a bit misplaced - if the company truly believes in the electric future of transportation, it should be channeling its energy into persuading more gas car drivers to make the leap – that's how you achieve real change.
