Stellantis and Samsung SDI announce new battery plant in the US
Stellantis, the automaker merger between Fiat Chrysler and PSA (owner of Peugeot and Opel), has announced a joint venture with battery maker Samsung SDI to build a plant in the US.
The venture will invest over $2.5b (€2.3b) to build a battery plant in Kokomo, Indiana. The construction of the plant is scheduled to begin later this year and the plant is set to become operational in Q1 of 2025.
The target is for a production capacity of 23 GWh (gigawatt hours) in 2025 with the aim to increase that to 33 GWh, and beyond, in the years to come.
Samsung SDI will apply its cutting-edge PRiMX technology in producing the EV battery cells. PRiMX was announced at this year's CES.
The battery plant will go a long way in helping Jeep, Fiat, Chrysler, Citroen, Dodge, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, and RAM's maker's plans to go fully electric by 2030. This is all part of Stellantis' Dare Forward 2030 strategy that would see it sell up to 5 million EVs by 2030.

It may be in decline Greg but from 2035 there will be no more ICE new vehicles sold. Decline is relevant to timescale - sure the numbers dropped if you compare 2020 to 2019 (11.9m v 15.8m cars sold) but it is still huge market compared to 1993 where ...
