Avatr unveils new EREV powertrain, 07 SUV to premiere it

In a move that follows the evolving consumer preferences in the Chinese electric vehicle market, Avatr Technology is adding an EREVoption to one of its most popular cars. The EV manufacturer, backed by Changan Automobile, CATL, and Huawei, has introduced an extended-range system, Kunlun, set to debut in the Avatr 07 SUV.

The Kunlun system, developed in collaboration with CATL, features a 39 kWh battery pack that can be charged from 30% to 80% in 15 minutes and offers a CLTC (China light-duty vehicle test cycle) pure electric range of 152 miles. When fully fueled and charged, the Avatr 07 with the Kunlun system achieves a combined CLTC range of an impressive 716 miles.

The Kunlun system uses an internal combustion engine with a thermal efficiency of 44.39% as a generator and it can output up to 100 kW. The math works out to 3.63 kWh of electricity per liter of gasoline (13.73 kWh per US gallon). These, of course, are theoretical numbers, and real-life results may be slightly lower.

The Kunlun-powered Avatr 07's four-wheel-drive version can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds on a full charge and 5.8 seconds when the battery is depleted. The vehicle can reach a top speed of 118 mph, regardless of charge level.

Avatr is not alone in this shift toward EREVs - Leapmotor and Neta Auto also recently expanded their offerings to include such vehicles. The trend is driven by consumer demand for vehicles that mitigate range anxiety, a common concern in the transition to electric mobility. The success of Li Auto also proves that there's no shortage of demand for EREVs in the Chinese market.
