Electric hypercars duke it out: Rimac Nevera, Tesla Model S Plaid, and Lucid Air Sapphire in a half-mile drag race
Whether you like it or are still on the fence, the automotive world is rapidly electrifying. And with electrification comes incredible performance. YouTube channel Dragtimes recently pitted three of the quickest production EVs against each other in a half-mile drag race to prove the point. And the results? Electrifying, to say the least. The contenders were the 1,020-hp Tesla Model S Plaid, the 1,234-hp Lucid Air Sapphire, and the reigning champion of power, the Rimac Nevera, with a staggering 1,914-hp output.
The first showdown saw Tesla and Lucid go head-to-head. Both sedans launched off the line with neck-snapping acceleration, hitting 60 mph in less than two seconds and completing the quarter-mile in the low nine-second range. Ultimately, the Lucid's superior power helped it to victory, crossing the half-mile mark in 14.42 seconds at 186 mph, while the Tesla trailed slightly behind with a 14.56-second time, also at 186 mph.
After the first race, the Rimac Nevera took on the Lucid Air Sapphire. Despite its power advantage, the Nevera, with its 1,914 hp, struggled to gain traction on the unprepared surface, allowing the Lucid to take an early lead. Nevera's immense power eventually overcame the traction issues, rocketing past the Sapphire to finish the half-mile in 13.84 seconds at a mind-blowing 203.9 mph.
Finally, the main event: the Rimac Nevera versus the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire. In the first race, starting from a standstill, the Nevera once again faced traction problems, allowing both the Tesla and Lucid to surge ahead. Surprisingly, the Lucid Air Sapphire dominated the Nevera for big part of the race, only to be overtaken at the end.
The second race was a 40 mph rolling start and it eliminated the Nevera's traction issues. It allowed it to unleash its full power and secure a decisive victory. The second place contest between the Tesla and Lucid was really exciting, putting the different acceleration and speed characteristics of each of these two high-performance sedans on display.
This drag race highlights the incredible performance potential of electric cars. With instant torque and frankly ridiculous horsepower figures, EVs are redefining what it means to be fast. The Rimac Nevera, Tesla Model S Plaid, and Lucid Air Sapphire are all incredible machines, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
