Volvo's EM90 electric van leaks ahead of the announcement

Ro, 16 October 2023

Volvo briefly teased its first all-electric MPV, the EM90, and we expect the vehicle to launch sometime in 2024. The Chinese MIIT, however, couldn't wait any longer and revealed some key specs as well as the design of the vehicle.

The EM90 is an interesting one as this is the first time the company ventures into the MPV segment. And as previously speculated, the EM90 is based on Geely's SEA platform, which is used for the making of numerous Zeekr models, including the Zeekr 009. This SEA platform also underpins the Polestar 4, Zeekr 001 and Zeekr X as well.

Unsurprisingly, the EM90 uses the same drivetrain as one of Zeekr 009's configurations - a rear-mounted 272 hp electric motor manufactured by VREMT (under the Geely's umbrella). Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an AWD version of the Volvo. Battery capacity is yet unknown, but the NMC cell is supplied by CATL.

The EM90 adopts a different design than its Zeekr 009 sibling and is more in line with Volvo's design language. However, the overall profile of the chassis seems almost identical to the Zeekr's, meaning the EM90 is a big boy. The van weighs in at 6.091 lb with 205 inches x 79.7 inches x 73.2 inches dimensions and a wheelbase at 126.2 inches.

Unfortunately The EM90 is supposed to be a China-only model and the Swedish-based company said it doesn't have plans to ship it to Europe or the US. There is still much to learn about Volvo's first MPV, but an announcement date seems to be pretty close, so stay tuned.
