The Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 is a monolithic, slab-sided behemoth about to be officially unveiled later this month. Built around what Xiaomi calls "Living Space" cabin philosophy, this is less of a traditional SUV and more of an intelligent, modular lounge that happens to have a set of wheels. Looking at the freshly revealed regulatory filings, the exterior design cuts a seriously imposing figure, dominated by the brand's signature "Mi"-shaped LED light clusters that blend seamlessly into a blanked-off front grille.

But the real magic - and the biggest talking point keeping the internet buzzing - hides under that expansive greenhouse. The consensus dictates that a proper high-end family cruiser must feature a 2-2-2 six-seat configuration, but Xiaomi is cheerfully flipping the script. The SkyNomad N90 lands with a distinctive 2-2-3 seven-seat layout instead. It is a conversational chess move by CEO Lei Jun, who has been hyping the practical versatility of this setup.

He paints a picture of a modern three-person family traveling alongside both sets of doting grandparents, or a chaotic two-child household flanked by a nanny and an elder. It is a pragmatic approach to multi-generational transport that instantly puts the N90 as an alternative to an upscale multi-purpose vehicle.

The interior is a playground of modular engineering, turning the tech dial straight to 11. The completely flat floor has ultra-long floor rails running the full length of the cabin. The headline act here is a front-row seating arrangement that supports a full 180-degree rotation - you can turn around and face your passengers when parked (what a spectacular mobile lounge experience).

The middle row gets standard zero-gravity comfort seats that promise to coddle your spine after a long day at the office. A ceiling-mounted entertainment screen slides back and forth along the roof liner. Interestingly, Lei Jun has publicly compared the N90's cabin utility to the Buick GL8 MPV, completely ignoring a much closer domestic threat: the giant BYD Great Tang, which spans between 207.2 inches and 208.7 inches in length and has a 123.2 inches wheelbase. It is a classic piece of misdirection, dodging a head-to-head comparison with BYD's fresh 2+2+3 seven-seater layout to claim the innovative high ground.

Of course, moving a rolling living room of this size needs a serious mechanical backbone, and Xiaomi has opted for a clever range-extender powertrain. There's a 1.5-liter turbocharged internal combustion engine under the hood that puts out 112 kW, but do not expect it to drive the wheels directly - its job is to act as an on-board electrical generator. The actual heavy lifting falls to a pair of motors pushing out peak power figures of 210 kW (282 hp) and 100 kW (134 hp) respectively.

Juicing up those electric motors is a 76 kWh battery pack tucked neatly into the chassis. That sounds modest compared to the huge batteries found in pure EVs, but it is perfect for a range-extender setup, promising a respectable pure electric range of up to 230 miles under the WLTC testing cycle. It is a clever move by Xiaomi - by offering a range extender alongside their pure electric lineup, they are tackling the ghost of range anxiety that still haunts long-distance family road trips. You get the smooth, instant torque of an EV around town, backed by the safety net of a fuel tank when heading deep into the wilderness.

The SkyNomad N90 proves that Xiaomi's automotive ambitions were never a flash in the pan. They are playing a long game, treating the modern premium SUV as an expandable tech ecosystem on wheels. By combining a highly versatile, MPV-rivalling seating configuration with the peace of mind offered by a range-extender powertrain, they seem to have crafted a vehicle that morphs from an executive shuttle to a chaotic family sanctuary. Traditional luxury automakers who spent decades perfecting the art of leather stitching and exhaust notes should be very, very nervous - the tech nerds have officially figured out how to build a genuinely desirable luxury cruiser.
