Xiaomi YU7 to offer cool views and cooler cabin with smart glass roof

Xiaomi's EV lineup is about to double with the introduction of the YU7, a new electric SUV. The latest images have provided a first look at the YU7's roof, sporting an intriguing purple tint. Some details about the vehicle have already been revealed, but now we can see that the YU7 will use the same impressive sun protection technology used on Xiaomi's debut EV, the SU7 sedan.
The Xiaomi SU7 has a vast 5.35 m2 of glass, creating a bright and open cabin. This expansive glass area also uses advanced technology to shield occupants from the sun's harmful rays and heat. The SU7's panoramic roof has a dual-silver coating that blocks 99.9% of UV rays and 99.1% of infrared radiation. The windshield goes even further with a triple-silver coating, blocking 99.5% of UV and 97.6% of infrared radiation.

According to internal tests conducted by Xiaomi, this advanced glass technology makes a significant difference in cabin temperature. After being exposed to 100°F for 1.5 hours, the interior of the SU7 reached 139.1°F. Xiaomi claims that the new Tesla Model 3, under the same conditions, reached a much hotter 160.7°F.
This clever glass roof from Xiaomi consists of a layer of 2.0mm clear glass with a dual silver coating, a middle film with a heat-insulating membrane, and another layer of 2.0mm clear glass with a Low-E coating. This combination of the dual silver coating and Low-e technology effectively reflects infrared radiation, while the heat-insulating film improves thermal insulation. This results in a Total Solar Transmittance (TTS) of just 12.3%, meaning very little solar energy enters the cabin.

Xiaomi has even addressed concerns from SU7 owners about the need for additional window tinting. The company advises that no extra film is necessary because the vehicle's comprehensive glass treatment, which includes acoustic laminated side windows with a UV-IR coating, already provides exceptional sun protection and also helps to keep the cabin quiet.
With the upcoming launch of the YU7 SUV scheduled for June or July 2025, its clever glass roof is expected to be one of the key highlights. This feature combines eye-catching aesthetics with the practical benefit of superior solar protection, offering both a stylish look and a comfortable interior environment for drivers and passengers.

a good chunk of the heat from the sun is plain visible light, so even at 100% IR and UV rejection, you will get cooked under this glass compared to a good old metal roof, but hey at least this might have the side effect of standardizing anti UV-...
